About

LP headshot.jpg

I'm an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. I research and teach at the intersection of film and media studies and American cultural studies with an emphasis on gender, race, and sexuality in the US. Broadly, I'm interested in nonfiction moving images—especially their undervalued histories and archives—and how they represent people and places in the US.

My academic identity is interwoven with my experience as a trans, queer person from the American South. Being out has been a long-term process of deconstructing notions and representations of difference in southern cultures and ideas of region and place that delimit non-normative gender and sexuality alongside race and class. I am invested in academic and community work that resists and dismantles ideologies that harm people marginalized at intersections of bias and discrimination.
